O: Young astronomers’ dream: Spring Weekend Family Carcamp to Palomar Mountain Observatory April 25th-27th Sponsored by Little Hikers and Junior Explorers and the Crescenta Valley Group Spring is just started with all the fun! Let's take the kids car camping and celebrate nature in the fresh mountain air, and get close to the stars. Literally. Pack the camping gear and come with us to the Palomar Mountains in northern San Diego area, home to famous Palomar Observatory. Spend the weekend among towering pine and oak trees at 4800 feet elevation. There is an Observatory nearby, a stream, biking trails and a variety of hiking trails. Palomar Mountain is home since 1936 to the Palomar Observatory, and the giant Hale Telescope. The 200-inch telescope was the world's largest and most important telescope from 1949 until 1992. The observatory currently consists of three large telescopes. You can visit the inside of the giant telescope and learn about astronomy. Activities include 5 mi rt hike to the Observatory. Also possible other hikes based on leader availability. Pack the kids’ bikes to enjoy the campsite surroundings area. Activities will also include outdoor skills instructions for the kids, and nature crafts. In the evenings we will enjoy a roasting campfire and s'mores S’mores made over a roaring campfire. This is a great trip for beginning campers and for young explorers and young astronomers . The campsite offers running water, flush toilets and coin operated showers! Participants will need to bring their camping gear including their own tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad, cookware, and reusable dinnerware and cups. We will have a campfire and s'mores if weather permits and the fire danger is low. We will provide a welcoming pizza dinner on Friday. Other meals and other food is on your own, with a possible Saturday potluck dinner. Price includes campsite fees, light snacks, s'mores, crafts materials, and outdoor skills instruction. Adults and kids over 12 : $20 (SC members), $ 25(non SC members), kids younger than 12 yo $15. Space is very limited to 24 lucky participants! No RVs please.
